One of my friends tries to find a little trinket (stuffed animal, poster, cute socks) and send it along with a note every month or so to a daughter who lives far away. I’m proud of the fact that, at 27, my son is happily married and thriving. Please practice hand-washing and social distancing, and check out our resources for adapting to these times. You may blame or resent the family member whom you feel is to blame for the geographical distance, even though it may not be anyone’s fault. Your joy at learning that you are going to be a grandparent may be tempered with sadness if the expectant parents live far away. So, if you are a parent who is living far away from your child, don’t despair. If you communicate with them on a consistent basis and keep your own expectations realistic, you still have the ability to be an important and meaningful part of your child’s life. My kid now lived about as far away from his mother as he could and still stay on the continental US. Learning to redefine myself as simply Kelley and not so-and-so's mom after more than 20 years of full-time parenting was *really* difficult! It doesn't have to be expensive, and it is always a nice surprise for her. My son, his wonderful girlfriend and my grand daughter live 2 hours away and I miss them so much that it feels like there's a big, ragged hole in my heart.
