Spanning 50°S-50°N (and all longitudes), starting in 1981 to near-present, CHIRPS incorporates 0.05° resolution satellite imagery with in-situ station data to create gridded rainfall time series for trend analysis and seasonal drought monitoring.

Both GPCC and WM underestimated seasonal precipitation, especially for spring precipitation. Based on mass balance calculations and Turc-Budyko analysis, this study investigates the accuracy of thirteen widely used precipitation gridded datasets for sub-basins in the Upper Indus Basin (UIB) in the Himalayas-Karakoram-Hindukush (HKH) region. The precipitation data are quality-controlled, multi-sensor (radar and rain gauge) precipitation estimates obtained from National Weather Service (NWS) River Forecast Centers (RFCs) and mosaicked by National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). Gridded precipitation data must be stored as a precipitation grid before it can be used in the meteorologic model. The data may be from radar sources or could be the result of complex calculations exterior to the program. The resulting product is a spatially and temporally complete, high-resolution (1/24th degree ~4-km) gridded dataset of surface meteorological variables.
