It was founded on 19 April 1973 in the German city of Bad Münstereifel by militants from the Portuguese Socialist Action (Portuguese: Acção Socialista Portuguesa).
The party was founded as the Democratic Peoples' Party two weeks after the Carnation Revolution, and it was originally a social democratic party; however, its views later shifted to the right.
