By the time of his death in 1971, the man known around the world as Satchmo was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz—a uniquely American art form. The Louis Armstrong House Museum is the house where Louis and Lucille Armstrong lived from 1943 until Satchmo's passing in 1971. The Louis Armstrong House Museum has acquired the only known film of the great jazz musician in a recording studio, recording the 1959 album, "Satchmo Plays King Oliver." The Louis Armstrong House Museum & Archives sustains and promotes the cultural, historical, and humanitarian legacy of Louis Armstrong by preserving and interpreting Armstrong’s house and grounds, collecting and sharing archival materials that document Armstrong’s life and legacy, and presenting public programs such as exhibits, concerts, lectures, and film screenings. The House Museum is shown only through guided 40-minute historic tours that start every hour on the hour (the last tour starts at 4 pm daily).
