Get an early start the following morning, and take Lost Lake Trail west to Medicine Bow Peak Trail for a 1,300-foot, three-mile climb to the peak's summit. This trail goes by Lookout Lake, Mirror Lake Picnic Area, and Lake Marie. Look back on Browns and Sugarloaf Peaks to the southeast and your route across some of Wyoming's quietest country. Descend to the shoreline, past the Lost Lake Trail junction (8), and head south on the Gap Lakes Trail, entering a parking lot and picnic ground (with pit toilets) at Lewis Lake (9). The Snowy Range of the Medicine Bow Mountains are a marvelously accessible little piece of high country in southern Wyoming west of Laramie. Continuing to Sheep Lake and following trail #389 to Brooklyn Lake, then taking the Lost Lake Trail (#395) is a fine loop, circling Browns Peak and covering about eleven miles total. The dominant form of vegetation here is grass, so you won’t have lofty trees to serve up privacy and shade. Highway 130 winds right by the highest peaks, and the area is wonderful for lovers of alpine terrain who don’t want to do long or steep hikes.
