California experiences every type of flooding, though the most common are alluvial fan, riverine, and coastal. The release of preliminary flood hazard maps, or Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), is an important step in the mapping lifecycle for a community. Between 113–115 people were killed by the flooding.
