The distinctive characteristic of a topographic map is the use of elevation contour lines to show the shape of the Earth's surface. The project was launched in late 2009, and the term “US Topo” refers specifically to quadrangle topographic maps published in 2009 and later.

These products are built on standard coordinate systems, include full United States (U.S.) National Grid lines and are particularly useful for emergency first-response operations….
